Free Trade Negations Between Canada-EU Good News for Canadian Business: CME

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 6, 2009) - Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) today welcomed the launch of negotiations towards a free trade agreement between Canada and the European Union.

"With a global economic downturn combined with a growing sense of increased protectionism in our main export market, starting these negotiations is critical to both the profitability and success of Canadian exporters," said Jayson Myers, CME president. "Ultimately, the conclusion of an FTA with the European Union should improve market access and encourage more Canadian companies to look to Europe as a destination of choice for their products."

Already, the EU represents a $36-billion market, accounting for 7.5 percent of Canada's total exports.

Canada's leading trade and industry association believes it is critical that negotiations are ambitious and aim not only to liberalize trade by eliminating tariffs, but to establish a broader economic partnership by enhancing the flow of skilled workers, opening procurement markets and eliminating non-tariff barriers.

According to CME's latest Management Issues Survey, the bilateral reduction of trade barriers is the main priority of manufacturers and exporters from coast to coast. CME will continue to work closely with the federal government as well as Canadian negotiators to ensure that the interests of its members are taken into account in addition to ensuring the final agreement translates into better access to European market and new business opportunities for manufacturers and exporters.

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is Canada's leading trade and industry association and the voice of manufacturing and global business in Canada.
The association represents more than 10,000 leading companies nationwide. More than 85% of CME's members are small and medium-sized enterprises. As Canada's leading business network, CME, through various initiatives including and the establishment of the Canadian Manufacturing Coalition, touches more than 100,000 companies from coast to coast, engaged in manufacturing, global business and service-related industries.

CME's membership network accounts for an estimated 82% of total manufacturing production and 90% of Canada's exports.
