Fresh from the Heart to the Calgary Food Bank

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Sept. 7, 2011) - The Calgary Food Bank has launched a new kind of campaign – the Fresh from the Heart fresh food drive. In partnership with many of Calgary's farmers' markets, Fresh from the Heart encourages customers to purchase a little extra during their trip to their local farmers' market and donate it to the Food Bank. The campaign was created by Wonder, a Calgary-based full-service advertising agency.

Throughout September and October, Fresh from the Heart will be present at famers' markets throughout Calgary. Please join us at the launch of this exciting new campaign.

What: Fresh from the Heart fresh food drive launch

When: September 8, 2011; 10am-1pm

Where: Kingsland Farmers' Market, 7711 Macleod Trail SW

Who: Food Bank representatives, Kingsland Farmers' Market vendors and customers

"Fresh from the Heart not only supports local growers and producers," says James McAra, Food Bank CEO, "but also increases fresh food donations to the Food Bank so that all Calgarians, regardless of income, have access to fresh, locally produced produce, meat and dairy. We believe that is important."

The Food Bank's Emergency Food Hampers contain approximately 7 days of food for each person in the household; the contents are based on Canada's Food Guide. The inclusion of fresh food helps us meet the nutritional needs of Food Bank clients; especially when more than 40% of those we serve are children. With a cooler the equivalent in size to almost 1,400 residential-sized refrigerators, the Food Bank has the capacity to collect and distribute large quantities of perishable foods such as fruit, vegetables, eggs, milk and meat.

Fresh food donations are only accepted at a Fresh from the Heart campaign table or at the Calgary Food Bank warehouse. We cannot accept fresh food donations in grocery store collection bins as we only pick up from those locations on a weekly basis.

"Wonder has been a long time supporter of the Food Bank. We admire the organization's creativity and resourcefulness and felt there was a good match for working together," says Christopher Heatherington, Creative Director. "We've had lots of fun creating this campaign and hope the fruits of our collective efforts result in an awareness that the Food Bank also accepts fresh food and ultimately in lots of fresh food donations to nourish the 'mind, body and soul' of those in need."
