Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center For Holocaust Studies Slams CUPE President For Joining Anti-Semitic Hate Fest

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 28, 2010) - Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies (FSWC) condemns Canadian Union of Public Employees President Denis Lemelin for agreeing to speak at the anti-Israel "Boycott, Sanctions and Divestment" conference in Montreal next month.

The theme and subject matter of the conference passes Natan Sharansky's anti-Semitism "3D" test: 1) It aims to disproportionately demonize Israel. 2) It will create a double-standard by singling out Israel for criticism while ignoring major human rights abusers like Sudan, China, North Korea and Iran. 3) It attempts to delegitimize Israel by questioning its very right to exist.

"By referring to Israel as an apartheid state, the organizers of this conference are inferring that Israel should fall under the very same UN convention that criminalized South Africa and called for it to be dismantled. That is an assault on the legitimacy of Israel and the inalienable right of the Jewish people to their homeland", said Avi Benlolo, President and CEO of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center. "It is shameful for a president of a major Canadian union to participate in a conference with strident anti-Semitic overtones, especially while the peace-process is actively being pursued by both sides on the ground" Benlolo added.
