From Weight Loss to No Weigh

The Groundbreaking Approach of One Notable Canadian Dietitian Attention: Books Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Lifestyle Editor PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MANITOBA--(CCNMatthews - March 25, 2005) - The Current Biography International Yearbook 2004 has selected Canada's own dietitian and founder of HUGS International as one of the six Canadian notables who made international news and history. Linda Omichinski is one commendable dietitian who created a health promoting initiative that empowers dieters to overcome their barriers to healthier living. The HUGS program focuses on Health and Understanding lifestyle behaviours through Group support and Self-esteem building. Omichinski's groundbreaking approach embraces those on the diet rollercoaster.

Today's society often associates healthy lifestyle changes with weight loss and Omichinski once prescribed to the same belief system while she was a consulting dietitian. During this time a client came to her and expressed that she was no longer starving or bingeing - rather she was eating more regularly and found that she was empowered by the energy and sense of well being this lifestyle change had brought her. Omichinski recognized the connection between healthy eating and the client maintaining the healthy weight that her body was meant to be. From then on Omichinski changed her approach to measure one's state of health based on lifestyle changes rather than success determined by weight loss.

Society loves diets - anything that guarantees fast and easy weight loss, in spite of harmful outcomes, is quickly embraced by the dieting public. Omichinski's pioneering work has continued to be challenged over the past 18 years by passing diet trends. The latest diet is quick to strap them back on the rollercoaster. In an interview with Current Biography International Omichinski expressed that "we're trained to believe that our success and value are determined by the number that shows up when we stand on the bathroom scale." HUGS strives to abolish this way of thinking and to empower clients to understand that, as Omichinski says, "we all have different body shapes, metabolisms, and activity levels. People are not meant to be 'one size for all'." People can be healthy and large and embrace health at any size.

Omichinski is the first dietitian to be honoured in the Current Biography International Yearbook 2004. Omichinski has made history through her passion and devotion to help others overcome barriers shaping their physical and mental health and building self-esteem. The Current Biography International Yearbook 2004 is available at libraries and schools to promote the work of these notables around the world.

Omichinski founded HUGS International Inc. in 1987. This innovative initiative has grown both successfully and internationally, with facilitators, support, resources, and programs running all over the world, including New Zealand and South Africa. Books and resources written by Omichinski, include You Count, Calories Don't, Tailoring Your Tastes, and Staying Off the Diet Roller Coaster.
