Frost & Sullivan: The Increasing Demand of Smartphones Drives the World Secure Digital Memory Cards Market

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwire - March 30, 2011) - The increasing popularity of smartphones and digital cameras coupled with their declining prices have encouraged the growth of the total secure digital (SD) memory cards market in 2010. Around 270 million smartphones were shipped in 2010, a 56 percent rise from the 173 million units in 2009. This has raised the number of mobile handsets that contain Micro SD slots.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (, World Secure Digital Memory Cards Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $6,630.0 million in 2009 and estimates this to grow at a CAGR of 15.8 percent during the forecast period.

Shipments of mobile devices with embedded Micro SD slots are expected to increase to 1093 million units in 2013, from 645 million in 2009 at a rate of 59 percent. The development of video applications and smartphones has resulted in the evolution of the existing SD memory cards that support higher-performance devices.

"The mobile market is still developing and has a lot of room for SD memory cards' growth," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Mariano Kimbara. "The increasing shipments of smartphones that contain Micro SD slots are expected to generate high demand for SD memory cards in the next three years."

With half of all mobile users likely to upgrade and replace the low-capacity memory cards in their devices, the market is all set for growth. Although a large number of SD cards are presently available in the market, many manufacturers offer similar products in terms of performance and storage capacity.

This makes it quite difficult for customers to differentiate competing product prices and represents a major challenge for SD memory card manufacturers. While the writing and speed capacity of SD memory cards continues to be key purchase criteria, customers are looking for an innovative and customized line of SD memory products that integrate with highly demanding end users devices at competitive prices.

SD card manufacturers are looking into new memory technologies, such as X3 technology, for the development of an innovative line of SD memory products at competitive prices. X3 technology allows for more bits per cell and improves gigabytes storage capacity at lower costs without requiring any additional capital investment or augmenting process complexity.

"In a market where cost effectiveness always ranks high, the price of SD memory cards has been reducing by a rate of 30 percent every year," observes Kimbara. "Therefore, several leading companies have a strong execution in X3 technology."
