FSNA Congratulates Government of Canada on Recent Decision Regarding Veterans' Disability Benefits

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 31, 2012) - The National Association of Federal Retirees (FSNA) would like to congratulate the Minister of National Defence and the Minister of Veterans Affairs on the recent announcement that the Government of Canada will not appeal the Federal Court's May 1, 2012 decision regarding the offset of Pension Act disability benefits from the Service Income Security Insurance Plan long-term disability payments (SISIP LTD).

"Veterans have honourably served Canada and deserve to be treated with fairness and respect," said Hélian Lizotte, FSNA National President. "More than 30,000 of our members are veterans and FSNA has been actively advocating that the government not appeal the decision and that they end the unfair reduction of SISIP LTD payments.

"The recent combined decisions of the Honourable Mr. Justice Barnes and the Government of Canada are only one small victory for Canadian veterans, there is still much work to be done," stated Lizotte. "FSNA urges the Government of Canada to offer further fairness to affected veterans and consider extending compensation retroactively, as recommended in the Canadian Forces Ombudsman's 2003 report, Unfair Deductions From SISIP Payments to Former CF Members."

FSNA continues to encourage the government to implement recommendations in the Veterans Ombudsman's recent report, Veterans' Right to Fair Adjudication, for improvements to the Veterans Review and Appeal Board in a timely manner, so that all Canadian veterans may benefit from improved accountability, fairness and accessibility in the review and appeals processes for disability pensions and awards.

FSNA is the largest national advocacy organizations representing federal retirees - their partners and survivors - from the Public Service of Canada, the Canadian Forces, RCMP and the retired federally appointed judges. FSNA is a not-for-profit association with more than 177,000 members and 84 branches across Canada. Its mission is to protect and enhance the pension, health and dental insurance benefits of federal retirees, and senior's benefits in general.
