FTQ Backs UFCW Canada Program to Sponsor Jonquiere
Wal-Mart Workers

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - March 11, 2005) - The FTQ, Quebec's
federation of labour, has asked its more than 5,000 affiliated unions to
join in a program to sponsor employees at a Wal-Mart store in Jonquiere,
Quebec set to lose their jobs on May 6.

The sponsorship program will consist of both financial assistance and
job-placement services.

At a meeting in Montreal on Thursday, the General Council of the FTQ
adopted the proposal, pledging the fullest support and solidarity of the
largest central labour body in Quebec, representing over half a million
members.

"We will not leave any of our wounded on the battlefield. We will take
care of all of our members who are impacted by Wal-Mart's vindictive
decision, by offering them financial support and helping them find new
jobs," pledged Yvon Bellemare, president of UFCW Canada Local 501.

UFCW Canada (United Food and Commercial Workers Canada) is the union
leading the campaign for a voice in the workplace for Wal-Mart workers.

"UFCW Canada has also already reached out to our local unions in Canada
and in the United States to sponsor the Jonquiere families affected,"
added Louis Bolduc, vice-president of the FTQ, and Quebec assistant to
the national director of UFCW Canada. "We are also establishing an
office and help centre in Jonquiere so we can be there for these workers
and their families."

UFCW Canada is one of Canada's largest private sectors unions with over
230,000 members working in the food retailing and processing,
warehousing, security, hospitality, office, retail, and health care
sectors.
