Fuel Your Romance and Boost Your Bedroom Decor With Good Lighting

Ashley Sleep Offers Tips Designed to Inspire More Light -- and More Comfort in the Home

ARCADIA, WI--(Marketwire - Jun 25, 2012) - The bedroom is a place to relax, unwind, rejuvenate and get ready for the next morning. It's a personal retreat that should help you find your center and leave you feeling energized and ready to seize your day, every day. But could something as simple as the wrong lighting hinder your chance at a night of romance or a great night's sleep?

"While a great mattress and a soothing bedroom design go a long way to promote better sleep, many people overlook the importance of proper lighting," says Ben Thorud, Senior Vice President of Ashley Sleep. "Instead of being an afterthought, lighting should be considered an important element of your bedroom décor -- one that can dramatically enhance our interaction within what's arguably the most important room in the house."

Lighting brings a sense of style to your bedroom, as well as a sense of warmth, romance and life -- which is why it's important to use a mix of lighting to define different zones in the room and maximize each space. Ashley Sleep offers the basics about three types of lighting -- ambient, task and accent -- and how to use them to your advantage:

  • Ambient Lighting. Think of it as the most basic lighting -- designed solely to illuminate the room so you can get around with ease. It can be from natural light sources, like a window or door, or artificial sources like ceiling-mounted fixtures. Even though this lighting is basic, it doesn't have to be boring. For example, you can hang an elegant chandelier or a few romantic pendant lamps in a variety of different shapes and styles to add a splash of light, as well as a designer touch to your room.
  • Task Lighting. This type of lighting is generally placed at a closer range and should be functional enough to help you get a task done -- but it should not resemble something that belongs in an office cubicle. For example, placing attractive wall sconces on either side of your headboard or a stylish reading lamp on a side table makes it easy to curl up in bed with a good book, while adding a touch of personality and romance to your space. Be sure to keep the bulb's color temperature (warm/cool) in mind when choosing your task lighting. You may want to pick a lamp that uses a three-way bulb so you can adjust it to suit your mood.
  • Accent Lighting. This is the fun stuff. Accent lighting adds a bit of drama wherever you may need it and makes it easy to change the look and feel of a room in a blink. For example, you can draw attention to a favorite piece of art with a narrow accent bulb, or use a track lighting "spotlight" to show off a decorative wall, a beautiful painting or a mantel collection. Adding candles around the room also creates a deep and inviting glow, perfect for romance.
