Fuji TV Strengthens IT Infrastructure With Xsigo Virtual I/O

SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwire - February 28, 2011) - Xsigo Systems, Inc., a leader in I/O virtualization, announced that Hitachi Solutions Co., Ltd. and Hitachi Electronics Services Co., Ltd. have deployed at Fuji TV Co., Ltd. a fully virtualized IT infrastructure that includes Hitachi Storage Solutions Hitachi Universal Storage Platform V storage virtualization, VMware vSphere server virtualization software, Hitachi Advanced Servers HA8000 Series servers, and the Xsigo VP780 I/O Director. This platform, which integrates 3 layers of virtualization, will begin production usage this month.

Hitachi Solutions and Hitachi Electronics Services together deployed at Fuji TV, a virtualized IT infrastructure. While Fuji TV understood the efficiency of the virtual platform, they faced physical I/O bottleneck issues that limited the further integration of their IT system. With an increasing number of NICs and HBAs on each server and growing cable management complexity, Fuji TV decided to adopt Xsigo I/O virtualization technology in their infrastructure.

The company manages more than 150 physical servers and is currently in the process of migrating data center workloads to the new infrastructure. With the new infrastructure, Fuji TV expects to increase resource utilization, reduce power, space and cooling demands, and lower overall total cost of ownership.

Hitachi Solutions and Hitachi Electronics capitalize on the full range of Hitachi capabilities to solve customer problems with advanced technologies and complete system integration, backed by technologies, reliability, and rich experience.

Xsigo virtual I/O allows users to provision virtual Ethernet and Fibre Channel "adapter cards" that replace the fixed physical cards that would otherwise be required. In the Fuji TV deployment, 24 virtual connections are allocated to each ESX host, a configuration would have required 24 cables per server with conventional I/O. With Xsigo virtual I/O, each host required just two physical connections, resulting in a 92% reduction in the number of cables and switch ports needed.

An additional benefit realized by Fuji TV was significantly faster virtual machine migration. As a result of Xsigo's high-bandwidth (20/40Gb), and low-latency InfiniBand interconnect, virtual machine migration became nearly instantaneous.
