Fun and Fit as a Family Returns for the 2010 Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival

MIAMI BEACH, FL--(Marketwire - February 22, 2010) - The Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival is pleased to present a third year of its groundbreaking childhood obesity prevention initiative -- South Beach Diet presents Fun and Fit as a Family featuring Kellogg's Kidz Kitchen. Taking place February 27 & 28, 2010 throughout Jungle Island, one of Miami's premier theme parks, Fun and Fit as a Family will bring together the best culinary, fitness, food, and health personalities and professionals in the country to show the community how they can make healthier choices, and have fun doing it!

"We are very excited about the third annual Fun and Fit as a Family," comments Lee Brian Schrager, founder and director of the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival. "The childhood obesity prevention initiative is an important topic for families across America, and we are pleased to have sponsors, partners and participating talent to promote this message in a fun and interactive way."

Featuring several of interactive activities for the whole family, the third annual Fun and Fit as a Family promises to entertain and educate all day long! Culinary demonstrations will take place in the Kellogg's Kidz Kitchen where stars like Paula Deen, Daisy Martinez, Rachael Ray, Guy Fieri, Rocco DiSpirito, and Michelle Bernstein will show children and parents their favorite recipes with a healthy focus. Children also have a chance to participate in the hands-on interactive Food Labs, featuring chefs Maggie Jimenez, Food Network's Marcela Valladolid (Mexican Made Easy), Adrianne Calvo, and SUSHISAMBA's Juliana Gonzalez.

Other destinations sure to keep families engaged include the Children's Sustainable Food Garden, maintained all year with the help of Jungle Island's Vice President of Horticulture, Jeff Shimonski. Here, children will have the opportunity to touch, smell, taste and explore a variety of herbs, fruits and vegetables. Next, families can move into the food tasting area where everyone can enjoy tasting new delicious and nutritious products from our sponsors and community partners. Throughout the weekend, South Beach Diet will also present a selection of healthy menu items -- including tuna salad on whole wheat bread, low-fat turkey burgers, creamy whole wheat macaroni and cheese, and much more -- that kids will love at the South Beach Living Kids Cafe.

This year's event will again feature one of Food Network and Share Our Strength's Good Food Gardens, an educational garden that offers children fun, hands-on gardening experiences that inspire healthy eating habits for life. The mission of the Good Food Gardens is to educate families on the importance of fruits, vegetables and other nutritious foods -- key ingredients to ending childhood hunger.

Driving home just how important this issue is, the Agatston Research Foundation and Share Our Strength® are hosting a health symposium, No Kid Hungry, All Kids Healthy: Ending the Trend of Overweight and Undernourished Kids, taking place on Friday, February 26 at Jungle Island, by invitation only. Led by Dr. Arthur Agatston, author of "The South Beach Diet" and founder of the nonprofit Agatston Research Foundation, a panel of experts will discuss how to raise awareness about childhood obesity and childhood hunger. Participating panelists include Pat Nicklin, Managing Director of Share Our Strength®; Rachael Ray, author, daytime TV host, and found of Yum-o! organization, and Audrey Rowe, USDA Deputy Administrator for Special Nutrition Programs. "We are delighted to bring together this expert panel to focus on the critical issue of ensuring good nutrition for every child in this country," says Dr. Agatston. "If we are to combat the obesity epidemic and counter childhood hunger, access to a healthy diet and lifestyle should be a right no child is denied."
