Functional Technologies Announces Launch of Hydrogen Sulphide-Preventing Wine Yeasts for Commercial Sale in Canada, Positive Data from Independent Wineries

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Sept. 13, 2012) - Functional Technologies Corp. (TSX VENTURE:FEB)(OTCQX:FEBTF) (the "Company") is pleased to report that its Phyterra™-branded hydrogen sulphide (H2S)-preventing wine yeast strains are now commercially available in Canada. These strains, produced by selective breeding and screened for H2S-prevention as well as low SO2 production, have also undergone independent evaluations at wineries that have not only confirmed these features of Phyterra™ yeast strains but have also showed a consistent improvement in sensory characteristics (i.e. more pleasant and flavorful aromas and tastes) in wines produced with Phyterra™ yeast.

The Company's proprietary H2S-preventing wine yeasts provide winemakers with a seamless solution to prevent and reduce the sensory defects (e.g. a distinct, noxious rotten-egg smell) associated with H2S, a gas naturally emitted as a byproduct of fermentation that represents a well-recognized, widespread industry problem and which can lead to a potential devaluation of wine. Functional Technologies' Phyterra™ portfolio of wine yeasts enable winemakers to prevent the problem from occurring, rather than resorting to remedial solutions that remove H2S after the wine has already been tainted in production. This in turn can provide winemakers and wineries with considerable time, labour and cost savings.

"We are pleased to now be providing the Canadian marketplace with access to this exciting innovative product," said Howard Louie, the Company's Chief Business Development Officer. "Our H2S-preventing wine yeasts have received high praise from wineries of distinguished repute, numbering in the hundreds of producers in the U.S.A. as well as in Europe, during trial releases over the past two seasons."

An initial three strains - Vivace, Allegra and Andante - are available for commercial purchase, now in Canada as well as the U.S., Europe, South America and upcoming in New Zealand, representing strains suitable for the production of a variety of red and white wines. These H2S-preventing yeast strains demonstrate confirmed normal winemaking characteristics including low to normal levels of SO2. In addition, independent evaluations conducted by commercial wineries and winemakers are confirming that wines produced by the Company's H2S-preventing wine yeasts are more fruity, floral, and balanced with very elegant and pleasant aromas compared to similar commercial strains available on the market.
