Fundamentals Looking Strong Across the Trucking Industry

The Bedford Report Provides Analyst Research on JB Hunt Transport Services & Knight Transportation

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - December 7, 2010) -  The trucking industry represents a very important component of the US economy. According to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis, the trucking industry accounts for about 5% of the Gross Domestic Product each year. The trucking industry was hit exceptionally hard during the economic crisis with nearly 2000 companies going out of business and others reducing the size of their fleets. Only in 2010 has demand volume begun to rise, giving truckers improved fundamentals. The Bedford Report examines the outlook for companies in the Trucking Industry and provides research reports on JB Hunt Transport Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: JBHT) and Knight Transportation, Inc. (NYSE: KNX). Access to the full company reports can be found at:

In recent quarters, remarks from major trucking companies suggest that shipment weights and load count are both increasing as various markets recover. Truck freight volume, however, remains quite erratic. The trucking industry growth is measured by the American Trucking Association Tonnage Index, which is a survey of a wide variety of trucking and shipping companies. In its most recent report -- for the month of October -- the ATA's seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 0.8 percent from September's level to 109.7 after rising a revised 1.8 percent the previous month.

With freight demand stabilizing, many truckers have posted dramatic improvements on their balance sheets. In fact, Knight Transportation said last month that strong management of the company's balance sheet allowed it to boost shareholders' returns all while "maintaining a strong platform for growth." Knight recently declared a special cash dividend of 75 cents per share and a regular quarterly dividend of 6 cents per share.
