Galen & Hilary Weston Honored for Global Leadership in Business & Philanthropy

The Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden Holds Gala in New York

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Apr 8, 2014) - The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, CM, OOnt and W. Galen Weston, OC, OOnt were honored for global leadership in business and philanthropy at a gala dinner to benefit The Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden located on Hanover Square in New York City.

The black tie evening which took place at Gotham Hall celebrated the common values and shared friendship between the United States, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. The creation of the Garden was prompted by a desire to honor and memorialize the 67 British subjects who lost their lives in the tragic attacks of September 11, 2001, and to honor The Queen on her Diamond Jubilee.

"I am truly thankful for this recognition," commented Mr. Weston. "Our efforts over the years reflect those of this organization in that we also believe in the great friendship among Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, spending time as we do in all three. Witnessing the bravery of the Navy Seals who joined us tonight makes whatever contribution we have made seem quite small. They are really the true heroes of our time."

"We are honored to be recognized in this way," said Mrs. Weston. "The rich tradition of English gardens, blended with the urban American landscape, has created a beautiful park that will endure for years to come, just as the memory of those who lost their lives on September 11th will remain in our hearts forever."

W. Garfield Weston Foundation, a family foundation that has made significant charitable contributions in Canada in the areas of neuroscience, education, land conservation, and in the natural sciences in Canada's North.

Mr. Weston was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1990 and has received the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. A former chairman of Pearson College of British Columbia, Canada, he is the Founding Patron of Prince's Charities Canada.

The Hon. Hilary M. Weston, CM, OOnt served as the 26th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1997 to 2002. During her tenure, she focused on issues related to women, volunteerism, and young people, drawing public attention to the homeless and at-risk youth.
