Gallaudet University Students Set to Showcase Photography at Barnes & Thornburg Event

Exhibit Launches Unique Partnership Between Law Firm, University

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - Oct 16, 2012) - Students from Gallaudet University's Art Department are getting a real-world opportunity to showcase their talents during a gallery reception on Thursday, Oct. 18th, hosted at the Washington, D.C. office of national law firm Barnes & Thornburg LLP.

The event, which will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the firm's office located at 1717 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W., Suite 500, serves as a kickoff to a unique partnership between the firm and the local higher education institution. Gallaudet is a world leader in liberal education and career development for deaf and hard of hearing students.

Students will display photographs they have taken in recent weeks and months and will mingle with reception attendees to share the stories behind the pictures. Sign interpreters will be in attendance to assist the Gallaudet students.

"We are so excited about this new partnership because it gives these students the opportunity to be a part of this art exhibit and experience what it's like to present their art to the public," said Karen A. McGee, managing partner of the firm's Washington, D.C., office. "We thought that collaborating with an important local institution, like Gallaudet, was a great way for us to continue our deep involvement in the community in which we work and live."

Barnes & Thornburg attorneys met last spring to discuss how to further expand their office's community effort. The group decided they wanted to focus on the Arts, according to McGee. The next step was to identify a partner school. McGee said that when firm representatives met with Gallaudet for the first time, they knew the school was the right choice.

"This is an exciting opportunity for Gallaudet art students to be able to show their work, especially when in an off-campus location so people outside the university can be exposed to their work," said Michelle McAuliffe, M.F.A., Assistant Professor of Art.

Gallaudet University is the world's only liberal arts university in which all programs and services are designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students.
