April 21, 2008 10:20 ET Supports Renewable Energy Generation

RIDGEFIELD PARK, NJ--(Marketwire - April 21, 2008) -, the leading business birthday cards and corporate holiday cards publisher, today announced that it has purchased 980,743 kilowatt hours (kWh) of Green-e certified renewable energy credits (RECs) from Renewable Choice of Boulder, Colorado, an award winning renewable energy and carbon offset provider.'s RECs are generated by wind farms, biomass, and small hydro projects across the United States. These credits offset 100 percent of the electricity the greeting cards publisher uses at all of its operational facilities including its headquarters in Ridgefield Park and its production facility in Landing, New Jersey.

Chief Marketing Officer, H.L. DeVore, reiterating comments he made last summer when the company announced its commitment to paper produced in mills offset by windpower, stated: "We are trying to do our small part to help the environment and support the generation of renewable energy in this country, all while sending energy dollars into friendlier hands." He went on to say, "The idea of spending nearly $4 on a gallon of gasoline so that foreigners could profit while Americans suffers in an apparent recession is abhorrent. Though it is going to cost us more money than we would otherwise spend, we see it as our patriotic duty to use renewable energy which helps reduce our dependence on fossils. And as citizens of the world, of course, we hope to limit our impact on the planet."

How RECs Work

Over seventy percent of U.S. electricity comes from fossil fuels like burning coal and gas. When fossil fuels are burned to generate electricity, harmful greenhouse gasses are emitted into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. Wind power-generated electricity is renewable, sustainable, and does not produce environmental pollution.

RECs help get more clean power online. Every renewable energy developer considers REC sales when deciding whether or not to build new facilities. RECs allow government and consumers to price the positive value of renewable energy, making its generation more competitive financially with electricity generated from fossil fuels.

Today, more than twenty states rely on RECs to track and verify government renewable energy mandates.

RECs purchased from Renewable Choice are Green-e certified. Green-e, a program administered by the nonprofit Center for Resource Solutions, audits and certifies energy-related products and services as well as related marketing claims. This certification guarantees that the amount of kWh purchased through RECs will be placed on the national grid in the form of renewable energy.
