Gaston Memorial Hospital Optimizes and Secures Healthcare Applications With Coyote Point Systems

Cost-Effective Load Balancing Solution is the Right Rx for Managing Online Patient Records and Imaging Systems

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- July 11, 2006 -- Coyote Point Systems announced that Gaston Memorial Hospital has deployed the company's Equalizer Series application traffic management systems to optimize, accelerate and secure the delivery of online patient records, X-rays and other critical healthcare-related information.

When Gaston Memorial Hospital in North Carolina needed to load balance network traffic and accelerate delivery of Web-based healthcare applications, its software vendors told Dave Bratcher that he'd need expensive networking gear from Juniper Networks or Cisco Systems. But Gaston's Manager of Networking & Telecommunications did not accept that advice. After doing some research, Bratcher discovered Coyote Point Systems and decided that the company's server load balancing and application traffic management systems were just what the doctor ordered.

Now all Gaston Memorial's Document Management, Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) and Kronos Time and Attendance applications go through the Coyote Point appliance. And Bratcher urges his software salesmen at McKesson and Siemens to tell their other customers about the Coyote Point alternative. "Going with Coyote Point saved the hospital boatloads of money," says Bratcher.

Gaston Memorial Hospital has over 3,600 employees using 2,000-plus PCs. The hospital handles all its network traffic using a Coyote Point Equalizer E350 application front-end system, which provides server load balancing and traffic management for eight Compaq Web servers running Windows 2003. A second Coyote Point Equalizer E450 appliance is deployed in front of four Web servers in the DMZ segment of Gaston's network to control remote access for more than 300 physician offices.

"The load balancer for the internal network is extremely busy," Bratcher says. "The medical records staff scans medical records into the document management system through that load balancer, and all our hospital physicians and nurses access patient records through it. Nurses and physicians from outside offices also access the hospital network for that information, as well as X-rays, remotely on the other side."

Gaston started out using the Coyote Point appliance as a Web server load balancer, then expanded the versatile system to act as an application front-end for healthcare application servers. It was a choice between using relatively expensive hardware clusters dedicated to back-end applications and databases or deploying Coyote Point to ensure non-stop application availability and user-friendly responsiveness while using less expensive back-end server hardware.

To comply with HIPAA privacy regulations, the Coyote Point systems also accelerate and secure encrypted traffic. "SSL can cause huge latency issues, but this isn't a problem with the Coyote Point boxes," says Bratcher. "This approach also saves us lots of money. Rather than pay for multiple security certificates for each server, we just need one for each Coyote Point appliance."

Deployment of the load balancing systems was simple. "The documentation was good, and the Coyote Point appliance worked right out of the box," says Bratcher.

"The top-level themes of healthcare I.T. today are connectivity, sharing and information access," says Eric G. Brown, a vice president at Forrester Inc., a Cambridge, Mass.-based technology consulting firm. Departments within the hospital need to share patient data, and hospitals need to share patient information with physicians who are back in their offices. That's being accomplished through Web-based front ends and physician portals. Load balancing is an important ingredient to that."

"Coyote Point is proud to provide networking systems that help hospitals and healthcare professionals deliver better patient care while ensuring patient privacy," said Bill Kish, Coyote Point CEO and CTO. "For Gaston Memorial and other community hospitals, our formula of providing essential Layer 4-7 server load balancing and application traffic management functionality that is simple to deploy and costs less than half other vendors' systems is the right prescription."

Coyote Point's Equalizer Series of Web application delivery systems are built to address the core availability and efficiency requirements for delivering critical applications over the Internet. Coyote Point systems provide a range of advanced and highly adaptive server/network load balancing and cluster management capabilities for datacenter environments that require the high-end reliability, performance and scalability of "big iron" servers with the low, incremental cost of ownership possible with today's commodity servers. Global server load balancing, SSL acceleration, compression, bandwidth management and other add-on features are available as low-cost, on-board upgrades.

"We use best-of-breed software and systems for all our applications," said Gaston's Bratcher. "I wanted a best-of-breed traffic management system to optimize my network. Application performance, non-stop availability, accelerated security and peace of mind are important to us, but the alternatives were hugely over-priced. You simply can't go wrong with Coyote Point."
