GE Celebrates the Spirit of Invention at Maker Faire 2011

SAN MATEO, CA--(Marketwire - May 20, 2011) - Debuting at Maker Faire for the first time, GE showcases how its 2,800 researchers, scientists and technologists spread out across GE's five Global Research Centers are working to solve global problems and help change the future.

Part science fair, part welding shop, part county fair, and 100% unique, Maker Faire Bay Area 2011 celebrates those who tinker, hack, play, craft and more -- a natural playground for GE and its researchers.

"GE is a company made up of makers across industries solving real time issues and we are excited that other makers and attendees will get some exposure to GE makers and technology this weekend," says Sherry Huss, general manager and founder of Maker Faire.

"As a company focused on life-changing innovations and with thousands of employees who put their imagination and know-how to work to solve problems, we believe in the power to change the world, one idea at a time," said Linda Boff, Global Director, Marketing & Communications, GE. "We're excited to be a part of Maker Faire Bay Area this year, as it encompasses the spirit of invention that GE is all about."

From Solar, to the future of healthcare technology, GE's makers work tirelessly to innovate, invent and build advanced technologies that are redefining what's possible.

Carousolar in the West Lot
Powered by GE's 72-panel CdTe Thin Film Solar Field, an all-white carousel will light up the night sky with colorful TETRA Countor LED lights. Attendees can stop for a ride or give their phone some extra juice at one of GE's Solar-powered Charging Stations. With 12.8 percent aperture area efficiency as certified by the NREL, the GE Thin Film solar panels used to power the Carousolar surpass all previously published efficiency records for CdTe Thin Film and therefore mark a technological breakthrough in the solar space. This cost-competitive solar solution requires less material than alternative technologies to achieve high levels of performance, a breakthrough that's said to nearly double the Thin Film share of the solar panel market by 2013.

InBody Unit in the Healthcare Pavilion
GE's InBody 230 machines will collect body composition statistics -- including body mass index (BMI), percentage of body fat (PBF), height and weight -- from Maker Faire attendees and compare individual user data to certain norms. Participants will go home with a custom printed report of their own data.

GE Speakers in the Healthcare Pavilion
Two scientists from GE's Global Research Centers will be speaking on the Health 2.0 Stage about the future of healthcare technology. Electrical Engineer Jeffrey M. Ashe will speak about wireless medical monitoring of hospital patients, a cutting-edge healthcare platform expected to increase patient mobility and lessen recovery time. Computer Scientist Peter H. Tu will discuss Computer Vision and Visualization technologies and how they will create the "smart patient room of the future."

Saturday and Sunday at 2PM on the Healthcare Pavilion Stage.
