Gentex Mirrors Reflect Innovative Hyundai Technology

ZEELAND, MI--(Marketwire - Aug 18, 2011) - To access roadside assistance, navigation or a host of other functions on the new Hyundai Sonata, simply look to the interior rearview mirror. One touch initiates voice-activated commands that provide access to an unprecedented array of connected-vehicle functions.

Hyundai teamed with Gentex Corporation (NASDAQ: GNTX), the Zeeland, Michigan-based manufacturer of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and camera-based driver-assist systems, to develop an automatic-dimming rearview mirror that acts as the interface for Hyundai's new Blue Link™ technology, which provides a significant number of automated services aimed at making the driver's life easier.

The mirror's bezel houses three buttons that, when pressed, allow the driver to use voice commands to operate a wide range of navigation, vehicle assistance, entertainment and emergency services -- hands free.

"Putting the Blue Link interface in the mirror just makes sense," said Michael Dietz, Hyundai's manager of product planning. "It allows the user to activate the system while keeping his or her eyes on the road ahead."

The Blue Link auto-dimming mirror is standard equipment on the Sonata Limited, and Hyundai has plans to add the mirror to additional vehicles in its lineup next year.

The mirror is also available with a compass display and Johnson Controls' HomeLink® Wireless Control System, which consists of three additional buttons located on the face of the mirror that can be programmed to operate garage doors, estate gates, security systems, home lighting, and other radio frequency-controlled devices.

Gentex auto-dimming mirrors automatically darken to reduce glare from the headlamps of vehicles approaching from the rear. The brighter the glare, the darker the mirrors become, making nighttime driving safer.

"By collaborating with Hyundai, we're able to use the mirror as an electronic module that delivers a variety of technology features to the vehicle, and exceptional functionality to the driver," said Gentex Senior Vice President Enoch Jen.

Founded in 1974, Gentex Corporation is the leading supplier of automatic-dimming rearview mirrors and camera-based driver-assist systems to the global automotive industry. The Company also provides commercial smoke alarms and signaling devices to the North American fire protection market, as well as dimmable aircraft windows for the commercial, business and general aviation markets. Based in Zeeland, Michigan, the international Company develops, manufactures and markets interior and exterior automatic-dimming automotive rearview mirrors that utilize proprietary electrochromic technology to dim in proportion to the amount of headlight glare from trailing vehicle headlamps. More than half of the Company's interior mirrors are sold with advanced electronic features, and more than 98 percent of the Company's net sales are derived from the sale of auto-dimming mirrors to every major automaker in the world.
