Georgetown University Reports on Value of Telepresence for Global Classroom Initiative

New Video Case Study Verifies Educational Impact, Savings of Time and Money From Collaborative Washington, D.C and Doha, Qatar Courses

HILLSIDE, NJ--(Marketwire - October 21, 2010) -  Georgetown University is benefitting students, and the university's bottom-line, with courses taught via telepresence that join its Washington, D.C. and Doha, Qatar classrooms. The telepresence environment includes Polycom's RealPresence™ (RPX™) HD rooms and is supported by Polycom's VNOC managed services powered by Glowpoint, Inc. (OTCBB: GLOW).

In a newly produced video case study, Randy Bass, the assistant provost of Teaching and Learning Initiatives and executive director of the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship at Georgetown University, said the school's telepresence rooms have "saved untold thousands of dollars in travel costs." He added, "There's no question that it was worth everything that we spent on it." One Georgetown student also said it was, "one of the best classes I've taken at Georgetown." The full video case study is viewable at

Originally, the school experimented with other visual communication solutions, but found that the Polycom RPX HD approach, later coupled with managed services from Glowpoint, offered the most natural collaborative experience. The "global classroom" was installed in 2008 and connects Georgetown University's main campus in the U.S. with the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, bridging almost 7,000 miles of ocean and land to establish a high-definition video and voice classroom environment (See original Polycom press release: Polycom Telepresence Helps Georgetown University Create Global Classroom). According to John Kruger, vice president of solution marketing at Polycom, "At that time, we were hoping to create wonderful, new opportunities for Georgetown's students, faculty, and the university overall. Two years later, based on the actual words of Georgetown's own employees, Polycom and Glowpoint have also created a savings of time and money for the university as well."

In addition to Georgetown University, Glowpoint currently provides managed services for Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon, among several other institutions of higher learning.
