Get Ready, Get Active! Parkinson SuperWalk 2012 Online Registration Opens

TORONTO, CANADA--(Marketwire - April 3, 2012) - Parkinson Society Canada launches the website today. Registrations begin for the 2012 event which takes place September 8-9, with a goal to raise $3 million in more than 95 communities across Canada. Canadians of all ages are encouraged to get active and show their 'Team Parkinson' spirit by registering online now. Parkinson SuperWalk gives people with Parkinson's, their family and friends the opportunity for physical activity and exercise, two very important aspects of managing Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson SuperWalk is also a celebration of life and family. It's an opportunity for the extended Parkinson family to get together once a year to raise awareness and funds for education, support services, research, and advocacy, on behalf of the over 100,000 Canadians living with Parkinson's.

"Whether someone is newly diagnosed with Parkinson's or they have lived with the disease for 20 years, whether someone has Young-Onset Parkinson's or they are a family member dealing with the progression and later stages of the disease, being physically active and engaging in exercise shows wonderful benefits in managing this movement disorder," says Joyce Gordon, Parkinson Society Canada President and CEO and captain for the Parkinson Society Canada Employees' Team. "Registering for one of 95 local Parkinson SuperWalk events is an important first step to making a difference," she adds. "Come out for the sheer joy of moving and help to raise money for an important cause," she added.

Parkinson SuperWalk launches as part of Parkinson's Awareness Month in April. Visit for events and activities happening across Canada.

Since 1990, more than $25 million has been raised at Parkinson SuperWalk events across Canada. More than 14,000 participants, volunteers and supporters, including more than 500 teams, raised $2.79 million nation-wide in 2011. Funds raised at Parkinson SuperWalk are reinvested in communities coast-to-coast to provide support services, education, advocacy and are invested in Parkinson Society Canada's National Research Program which seeks to identify causes, better treatments and one day a cure.

Parkinson's is neurological disease for which there is no cure. More than 100,000 Canadians and over 6 million people worldwide have Parkinson's. Since 1965, Parkinson Society Canada, 10 regional partners, 240 chapters and support groups have provided support, education, advocacy and funding for research.
