Celebrity Chef Ellie Krieger Creates Healthy and Tasty Snacks Featuring California Grapes -- Perfect for Children's Lunchboxes or Adult Noshing

FRESNO, CA--(Marketwire - Aug 22, 2012) - We are a nation of snackers. Nearly 90% of us admit to snacking in between meals and, according to a report by the USDA Agriculture Research Service, on average, we eat twice the number of daily snacks Americans ate 30 years ago. Therefore, it's more important than ever that we choose healthy snacks. The busy back-to-school season is the ideal time to put healthy snacking habits in place.

"I hope to help change the nation's snacking habits by sharing healthier snack strategies and choices," says celebrity chef, best-selling author and TV host Ellie Krieger, M.S., R.D., who is working alongside California's table grape growers to encourage healthier snacking. "Starting with fresh ingredients such as California grapes will likely result in a more healthful and nutrient-rich snack."

Ms. Krieger, known for her everyday, down-to-earth focus on enjoying foods that are healthy, without compromising on quality and flavor, explains why grapes are an ideal snack. "Any way you dress them, up or down, grapes add a sweet sparkle, crunch and color to snacks, and kids love them," Krieger says.

When it comes to snacks, Ms. Krieger urges people to snack only in response to true hunger and not out of habit; plan a healthy snack instead of succumbing to impulse; choose nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains; try to keep snacks under 200 calories; and eat regular and balanced meals to prevent hunger munching throughout the day.

To help families get back on track with healthy snacking this back-to-school season, Ms. Krieger has created one adult-worthy and four family-friendly snack recipes that can be mixed and matched for the lunchbox, as an after-school or after-work snack, or to satisfy a late-night craving.
