Get uberSVN and Be First to Get Subversion 1.7

WANdisco, a Leading Corporate Sponsor of the Apache Subversion Project to Include Subversion 1.7 With uberSVN the Day It's Released

SAN RAMON, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 21, 2011) - WANdisco, a leading provider of Apache Subversion-based software and services for the enterprise, and a major corporate sponsor of the Subversion project today announced that uberSVN -- the free, open ALM platform for Subversion that's seen thousands of installations since its launch in April -- will include 1.7 as soon as it becomes generally available. WANdisco will continue to ship Subversion 1.6.17 along with 1.7. Users can take advantage of a 'toggle' feature in uberSVN's configuration settings to deploy the product with either 1.7 or 1.6.17. This 'toggle' feature also makes it easy to upgrade or downgrade the version of Subversion after uberSVN is deployed.

uberSVN lets developers combine their favorite open and closed source ALM applications in a single integrated platform with an easy-to-use web interface and model configuration that make Subversion simple to deploy and manage, even for first-time users. uberSVN also includes Subversion's first-ever social coding environment with features familiar to Facebook and Twitter users, that enable developers to see each other's real-time progress.

"We believe uberSVN is much more than 'Subversion made easy,' but the usability of this brilliant new platform is something WANdisco is really proud of. Part of the key to this usability has been our commitment to making uberSVN available with the latest Apache Subversion binaries," said David Richards, President and CEO of WANdisco. "We're able to live up to this commitment because our team plays a significant part in delivering every new Subversion release."

WANdisco staff, including Hyrum Wright, the company's Director of Open Source and Subversion's release manager, along with senior Subversion developers Phillip Martin and Julian Foad made significant contributions to the planning and development of Subversion 1.7 as they have with every new release of Subversion.

Key Subversion 1.7 enhancements designed to dramatically improve the scalability, performance and usability of Subversion include:

  • HTTPv2 - a protocol rewrite designed to dramatically enhance performance over high latency networks.

  • WC-NG - a rewrite of the working copy library that improves performance by centralizing metadata storage. WC-NG also provides a foundation for supporting features such as shelving and offline commits in future releases.

  • svnrdump - a new client tool that provides the same functionality as svnadmin dump and svnadmin load, but on remote repositories. This eliminates the need for administrator access to source or target repositories on remote servers.

WANdisco will also sponsor a number of additional enhancements to Subversion 1.7's branching and merging capabilities, including the introduction of the "newmerge" command. All of these improvements will be presented on September 28, during the free webinar -- Introducing Subversion 1.7 -- detailed below.
