GETTING RESULTS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE: Measures to Reduce Child Poverty, Expand Child Care and Ensure Affordable Access to Education and Training

HAMILTON, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 11, 2006) - NDP Leader Jack Layton said that ensuring young people get off to a great start in life is a cornerstone of the NDP platform.

"Parents work hard to ensure their children can succeed," Layton said. "We need to give working families a helping hand to make sure all children have the opportunity to achieve their potential. The NDP platform outlines some practical ways to help parents."

The 2006 NDP platform gets results for young people by:

- Reducing child poverty with a $1,000 increase in the National
Child Benefit targeted at lower-income families.
- Ensuring quality child care with a national Child Care Act and
investing in expanding the number of quality, licensed non-profit
child care spaces.
- A step-at-a-time, restoring the transfer payments for post-
secondary education that were cut by then-Finance Minister Paul
Martin. This will enable provinces to improve post-secondary
education and increase accessibility.
- Overhauling the Canada Student Loans Program to improve access
and reduce the burden of debt for students.

"Every parent wants the best for their child," Layton said. "New Democrats want the best for every child. Regardless of their parents' incomes, every child deserves nurturing and education. Our NDP plan takes important steps to make sure they get the good start they deserve."
