Getting the Right Insurance Coverage Trumps Price for Employees, Liazon Survey Shows

Company Combines Big Data and Analytics With Consumer Choice to Drive Better Decision Making

BUFFALO, NY--(Marketwired - Jan 21, 2014) - Getting the right level of insurance coverage is the major driver in selecting health insurance and other employer-sponsored benefits, according to employees surveyed by Liazon, the operator of the industry-leading private benefits exchange for businesses. Overall, 53% of employees surveyed said they selected their plans because they provided the right level of coverage, while only 23% said they selected plans due to low cost.

The survey, which was conducted online among employees and employers who use Liazon's Bright Choices® Exchange, also found that the exchange encourages more efficient utilization of their benefits, fundamentally changing the way employees interact with their employer-sponsored benefits.

Employees using Bright Choices have a better understanding of their benefits. Overall, 58% of users surveyed said they better understand what their health insurance covers and 53% said that they understand their ancillary benefits more clearly.

As employees become better at choosing their benefits, they also become better at using them, creating a savvier consumer. In fact, 63% of users reported being more aware of the costs of medical care. Importantly, 60% said they are now more engaged in their health care decisions.

Liazon's Bright Choices helps empower employees when selecting their benefits through the application of "Big Data" and analytics combined with a guided shopping experience. Bright Choices walks each user through a questionnaire about health, wealth and personality in order to recommend the right benefits package for their entire family. Employees can also compare plans side-by-side and even make choices based on scenario analyses of projected costs.

"It's a significant shift when an individual is put in charge of choosing his or her benefits and has access to decision support tools and clear explanations of the plans and services," said Alan Cohen, Liazon co-founder and chief strategy officer. "Educated employees make educated choices."

According to the survey, employees are happy with shopping for benefits online. Overall, 75% of employees reported that they are satisfied or very satisfied with the online experience.
