Cook Children's is implementing GetWell Town in 244 beds in its facility, including the Emergency Department to help short-term patients as well.

By offering educational materials in a new compelling, multi-media format, patients and families are better engaged and better informed. Early results show patients and/or family members are viewing education materials more than once. Cook Children's is also using a "lock-out" feature that runs through a mandatory patient safety video on GetWell Town before enabling entertainment features. This ensures that all patients receive consistent information.
The Child Life department also posts activity calendars on GetWell Town so that patients can plan their day and take advantage of all the fun and therapeutic activities that the hospital offers. The Child Life staff is also freed to spend more of their time with children in therapeutic roles rather than delivering DVDs from room to room because GetWell Town already comes loaded with a good variety of movies and games for various age groups. Full internet access is also available with parental controls that allow parents to decide appropriate content based on their preferences. Additionally, Spanish speakers can navigate the system and access the content in their preferred language.
Future implementation plans include leveraging GetWell Town to improve clinical outcomes through medication teaching. By integrating the hospital's medication administration system with GetWell Town, patients will automatically receive an option on their menu screen to view information about their specific medications.
