GetWellNetwork's O'Neil Center Publishes Interactive Care Model

Engaging Patients in Care Requires Shift in Role of Provider and Patients

BETHESDA, MD--(Marketwired - October 06, 2015) - GetWellNetwork®, Inc., the leader in Interactive Patient Care™ (IPC) solutions, announced today that the O'Neil Center has published its Interactive Care Model (ICM) in the October 2015 issue of the Journal of Nursing Administration. The ICM outlines steps providers can take to help patients and families become more fully engaged in the management of their health.

Developed by researchers, reviewed by clinical experts and informed by feedback from clinicians and patients from several major health systems, the ICM provides a roadmap to deliver care in a more person-centric, interprofessional way. The new model describes the interactions between providers and people in all care settings, and identifies five phases, or encounters, of interactive care:

  • Assess a person's capacity for engagement
  • Exchange information and communication choices
  • Collaborate and plan between persons and clinicians
  • Determine appropriate interventions
  • Regularly evaluate the engagement level and clinical outcomes

"Effectively engaging patients and families in their health is a key component of transforming care delivery and creating healthier communities," said ICM and article lead author, Karen Drenkard, Ph.D., RN, NE-BC, FAAN, chief clinical and nursing officer at GetWellNetwork. "The Interactive Care Model has been developed by experts and demonstrates how engaging patients in their care process can improve outcomes and promote improvement in population health."

"The Interactive Care Model supports the need for integrating patients and families as essential members of the health care decision-making team," said Susan Grant, MS, RN, FAAN, NEA-BC, chief nurse executive at Emory Healthcare and member of the O'Neil Center's Clinical Advisory Council. "Clinicians must engage in meaningful conversations that address the patient's needs and concerns, while providing them the tools and resources to manage their health care."

The ICM can be viewed online here.

Meet the authors of the ICM at Booth #419 at the ANCC National Magnet Conference® in Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 7-9, 2015.
