Glendale Veterinarian Announces Ear Crop Services

GLENDALE, AZ--(Marketwire - Nov 1, 2011) - Finlayson Animal Hospital P.C. announced that the veterinary clinic offers ear crop services for specialty dog breeds, including Dobermans, Pit Bulls, Great Danes, Boxers, Schnauzers and Miniature Pinschers. Veterinarian Dr. Alan J. Finlayson is skilled in this cosmetic procedure, and frequently performs crops on dogs' ears.

"Ear cropping is a safe cosmetic procedure for creating a distinctive, perked ear, which is a defining feature for many dog breeds," said Dr. Finlayson. "Unlike many common vet procedures, a successful ear crop requires a skilled, artistic touch. When choosing a vet to perform this procedure, it is essential that the vet has extensive training and experience."

Dr. Finlayson, who has been practicing as a vet in the Phoenix and Glendale communities since 1976, has successfully performed ear cropping for several decades.

The ear cropping procedure involves carefully removing about 2/3 of the ear along the back and top of the ear. Removing the weight of this tissue and supporting the ears in an upright position while the dog is still young, allows the ears to stand erect. Dogs that are born with long floppy ears like Doberman's, Great Danes, and Pit bulls, will have erect ears that stand upright after and ear crop. This requires the ear to be supported in an upright position as the dog matures. The best results occur when the dog's ears are cropped when the dog is less than 12 weeks old. Several different types of cropping styles are popular with different breeds, and Dr. Finlayson works closely with dog owners and breeders to ensure the final cropping is both aesthetically pleasing and safe for the dog.

Dr. Finlayson provides 6 weeks of after care at no additional cost to the dog owner. He works closely with dog owners to ensure that proper follow-up care is provided. Depending on the dog breed, the ear crop and training process will usually last 4 to 6 weeks. Sometimes however, the occasional dog will need attention to the ears in the form of wrapping the ears with tape and supporting the ears with sponge material, wire and/or foam splints for several months. "The supports hold the ear upright while the cartilage matures and stiffens," said Dr. Finlayson. "Supporting the ear and the after care of the ears will help ensure the ears are upright and there is a good cosmetic outcome."

Many veterinarians delegate the after care of the ears to the dog owner. Dr. Finlayson feels this is an important part of the whole ear crop process and as a result provides this care for every dog he does an ear crop on for 6 weeks after the surgery. According to Dr. Finlayson, following the ear crop procedure, it is essential for the dog owner to make sure that the ears are cared for properly and supported. Post operative aftercare is just as important as the surgery in producing a good cosmetic result.

In addition to ear crop services, Finlayson Animal Hospital P.C. provides routine wellness care and emergency care for dogs and cats. The animal clinic also cares for pocket pets, horses, livestock and potbellied pigs. Routine wellness care, emergency care and surgical care, both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery are available. In addition vaccinations, spay and neuter operations, flea and tick control, and heartworm prevention are preformed regularly for our patients and clients. As an equine veterinarian, Dr. Finlayson provides wellness care, floats teeth, diagnosis lameness and provides reproductive care including pregnancy diagnosis by Ultrasound.

"We are proud to provide comprehensive veterinary care services to the greater Phoenix community," said Dr. Finlayson. "We know that caring for a pet is a serious responsibility, and we are committed to providing affordable, quality care."
