KANSAS CITY, MO and PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI--(Marketwire - September 8, 2010) -  The Global Orphan Project is pleased to announce the inaugural Tour d'Haiti, a five-day cycling event which will raise awareness about the successes as well as the challenges facing the thousands of children left homeless and orphaned after Haiti's devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010. The Tour d'Haiti will also raise funds to cover operational expenses for The Global Orphan Project. The Global Orphan Project's 27 villages care for more than 2,000 children throughout Haiti. Another seven villages are currently under construction as part of earthquake redevelopment.

The Tour d'Haiti presented by The Global Orphan Project will be a five-day, 200-mile bicycle ride for 25 amateur cyclists across southern Haiti. The event kicks off 15 miles east of Port-au-Prince in Croix-de-Bouquets on January 8, 2011. The group of 25 amateur cyclists will then ride west to Léogane, the epicenter of the earthquake, on January 9th. The following three days will be spent riding throughout the Les Cayes area of southern Haiti where the group will visit hundreds of children in the care of The Global Orphan Project. The Tour d'Haiti will conclude with a scenic ride featuring coastal views on January 12, 2011, the one year anniversary of the earthquake.

Throughout the Tour d'Haiti, the riders will be meeting with and caring for close to 1,000 orphaned children in eight to 10 villages operated by The Global Orphan Project. In addition, over 200 bicycles will be given away to the children, most of whom are between the ages of five and 12.

The dates of the Tour d'Haiti are January 8-12, 2011. The Tour d'Haiti is open to any person age 18 or older who is physically able to ride 200 miles over five days across the challenging terrain of Haiti. Space is limited to 25 riders. The price for participation in the Tour d'Haiti is a donation of $10,000, a large portion of which will be tax deductible. Participants will be provided with food, lodging, air and ground transportation to and from Haiti, as well as in Haiti. Participants will also be provided with a cyclocross bicycle, team clothing, helmet, sunglasses, casual wear and a Garmin Edge 305 gps-enabled computer.

All stages and locations are subject to change due to weather, road conditions, traffic and other circumstances.
