Global Trends Impacting Canadian Food Industry Covered in Keynote Presentation at Retail Council of Canada/Food and Consumer Producers Grocery and Consumer Goods Leadership Symposium

A.T. Kearney Partners Discuss Impact of Increased Global Volatility on the Canadian Food Industry

TORONTO--(Marketwired - Jun 5, 2013) - In a keynote presentation today at the Retail Council of Canada's and Food and Consumer Products of Canada Grocery and Consumer Goods Leadership Symposium, which took place at RCC's Store 2013 conference, A.T. Kearney partners, Dave Donnan and Mike Moriarty, discussed consumer and global economic trends that are impacting the Canadian food sector. Their presentation focused on how manufacturers and retailers should respond to the impact of economic power shifts, consumer demographic changes, resource availability and the networked consumer.

Donnan and Moriarty pointed out five trends that would impact the Canadian food industry: 1) Shifting consumer preferences driven by changing demographics and emerging global food cuisines; 2) Empowered food activism; 3) Increased government regulation; 4) NAFTA import/export effects; and 5) Increased international competition and industry consolidation.

Mike Moriarty pointed out, "Demographics in Canada are undergoing a major transformation. By 2031 a quarter of the population will be over 65. Retailers and manufacturers need to address the aging consumer with products, packaging, merchandising and services in the near term."

Commenting on the increase in consumer food activism Dave Donnan stated, "Consumers are much more aware of the origination of their food and expect safe, healthy food, environmental stewardship, and attention to animal welfare. Food and package waste are an increasingly significant and visible consumer issue."

The RCC/FCPC Grocery and Consumer Goods Leadership Symposium took place at the Toronto Congress Centre on June 5, 2013. The conference is attended by senior executives from all sectors of Canada's grocery retail industry as well as senior executives for companies that supply Canadian grocery retail.
