Global Vision Junior Team Canada: First Nations Youth Makes History at APEC

YOKOHAMA, JAPAN--(Marketwire - Nov. 8, 2010) - When comparing the distant lakes of Northern Saskatchewan to the bustling streets of Yokohama during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), one thing is for certain: this would be an exceptional place for a Northern Dene youth to be meeting the Prime Minister of Canada, various Heads of State and CEOs from some of the world's largest multinational firms.

From November 8-14, Gabrielle Scrimshaw of Hatchet Lake First Nation will be doing just that. Gabrielle is Canada's first ever First Nations youth to attend APEC at the forum's Voices of the Future (VOF) program. Voices of the Future is a unique program that runs parallel to the APEC Summit in Japan. At the program, the twenty-one member countries that make up APEC send their nations best-and-brightest youth to discuss foreign investment, trade and growth opportunities.

Along with the VOF program, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT)'s Invest In Canada bureau as well as Global Vision, a national not-for-profit youth leadership organization, have trained Gabrielle and three other Canadian youth delegates. The team is up to the challenge of promoting Canadian industry and encouraging foreign direct investment to Canada.

Gabrielle grew up in Northern Saskatchewan and at the age of twenty-two has studied international business and marketing in eighteen countries spanning five continents. As the first in her family to earn a University degree, Gabrielle is a young professional with serious ambition. Recently, she was recruited as the Royal Bank of Canada's first ever undergraduate Associate in the organization's Graduate Leadership Program.

When asked about the opportunity to attend APEC, Gabrielle replied "I am absolutely honoured to be representing my culture for the first time here at APEC. My team and I have been tasked and trained to engage some of the world's most prominent Chief Executives and Heads of State – something I could have never anticipated in my wildest dreams if you would have asked me years ago, especially growing up where I did."

Global Vision is a national non-profit Canadian organization that has built a legacy as the leader in training young Canadians for the global marketplace. Each year, thousands of applicants from across Canada apply for only a few coveted positions of the organization's Junior Team Canada (JTC) and APEC program.
