GlobalEnglish Reveals Alarmingly Low Business English Competency in Corporate China

Global Business Leaders Gather in Shanghai and Beijing to Discuss the Urgent Need to Address the Dramatic Communication Skills Gap of a Workforce Ill-Equipped to Conduct Global Business

The report reveals a surprising insufficiency in the Business English communication competencies that are critical to effective and efficient operations across all global industries. The issue is so urgent that another GlobalExchanges summit will be held in Beijing on April 14, 2011.

The 2011 Business English Index for China is 5.10 out of 10 possible points, confirming that current Business English skills are inadequate to meet the demands of global business in the 21st century. More than 11,000 Chinese employees in top global organizations operating in China were surveyed for the BEI. Scores of 5.0 or lower translate into a workforce that can understand only basic information on the telephone or in person, but cannot understand most business presentations, take a leadership role in business discussions, or perform relatively complex tasks.

"China is struggling with a low BEI because most English education focuses on general conversational English skills rather than the necessary communication tools for global business," concluded Kahl. "By 2025, it's estimated that more Chinese people will speak English than the number of native English speakers worldwide. But only companies that invest in the development of their employees' Business English communication capabilities will be able to advance their Enterprise Fluency to successfully compete in the global marketplace."

As globalization continues to top the list of strategic initiatives for large enterprises, the BEI was established to implement a standard way for businesses to benchmark their Business English skill level against other companies and allow comparison for trends across industries. The 2011 BEI report is the first in a series of annual reports on these measures.
