GlobalFit Shows How Corporate Wellness Programs Beat Rising Healthcare Costs

PHILADELPHIA, PA--(Marketwire - Feb 22, 2012) - As healthcare costs continue to strap employers' cash reserves, Penn National Insurance (PNI) has maintained annual increases 75% below the national average for three years running. The role played by the corporate wellness program at PNI is the significant takeaway of the new white paper.

While employers nationwide saw annual increases of about 8% on average, PNI's costs rose just 2% for the years 2010 through 2012. Robert Joswick, PNI's Director of Compensation and Benefits, credits the company's investment in their team's health. "As a medically self-insured company, our efforts around wellness promotion have allowed us to steadily buck the trend of healthcare-cost increases," he states.

To keep their employees engaged with exercise, the Harrisburg, PA-based insurer turned to Destination: You, a step-based activity program from GlobalFit, a leading provider of physical activity programs for American businesses. "Nearly two-thirds of our population keeps active every day with Destination: You," Joswick says.

The new white paper, titled "Physical Activity Interventions and the Myth of R.O.I," explores the rationale behind investments in physical activity programs such as Destination: You. Documenting the measurable physiological improvements from exercise, the resulting impact on healthcare costs, and the consistently strong engagement and retention levels from Destination: You, the white paper determines that return on investment (ROI) for such programs is far more than a myth.
