Gloria Steinem on campus for International Women's Day

Pioneering feminist to share insights with next generation of leaders

CALGARY, AB --(Marketwired - March 07, 2016) - Feminist icon Gloria Steinem will speak at the University of Calgary campus on Tuesday, March 8 in honour of International Women's Day.

Steinem, who is recognized world-wide as a social and political leader of the feminist movement, will address a campus and community audience in an evening presentation entitled The Longest Revolution. She will reflect on her experiences at the forefront of the gender equality movement and discuss her impressions of the challenges still facing women today.

Steinem's visit to campus is being coordinated by the Werklund Youth Leadership Centre (YLC), in partnership with the Canadian Women's Foundation (The Foundation) and more than 900 people have registered to attend this at-capacity event.

YLC Director Brittany Harker Martin says hosting Steinem provides a unique opportunity to introduce a new generation of young women and men to an iconic leader who has spearheaded a movement that has made great strides towards equality.

"This is an opportunity to spark conversations about gender equality, and the role youth can play in addressing these issues," says Martin. "Through the work of feminist leaders like Gloria Steinem, we have closed much of the gap. But there is still a gap, and that is going to be up to the next generation of leaders to resolve."

Sheherazade Hirji, President and CEO of the Canadian Women's Foundation, says, "By partnering with the Youth Leadership Centre, we benefit from their incredible passion for change, we learn new perspectives, and we help nurture the next generation of leaders who are committed to working for equality."

MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Both Martin and Hirji are available for interviews on March 8 from 5:20-5:50 p.m. (prior to the 6 p.m. presentation by Steinem). While media are invited to attend the full presentation, audio and/or video recording will permitted for the first 10 minutes of Steinem's presentation only. Media are requested to register as seating is limited.
