OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 17, 2013) - General Nutrition Centres Company (GNC), in consultation with Health Canada, is voluntarily recalling its natural health product "Women's Phytoestrogen Formula" - used for the relief of menopausal symptoms - due to possible contamination with chloramphenicol.
Chloramphenicol, an antibiotic, may pose serious health risks to consumers as it's associated with a rare risk of aplastic anemia, a serious blood disorder that can be fatal. This reaction is unpredictable and not related to a specific dose of chloramphenicol. If you have used or purchased "Women's Phytoestrogen Formula" and are concerned about its impact on your health, please consult your healthcare practitioner.
Canadians can monitor the table on the Healthy Canadians Web site for additions to the list of products potentially contaminated with chloramphenicol that may pose a serious risk to their health.
