GO Travel Direct Postpones Transatlantic Service From Winnipeg

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 20, 2009) - GO Travel Direct, Canada's leading direct-sell tour operator has reluctantly had to postpone transatlantic flights from Winnipeg for the moment and will concentrate on a new partnership with XL Airways France and their newly introduced flights from Montreal to Paris.

The first tour operator to take advantage of a new European Union (EU)-Canada bilateral open skies agreement, GO Travel Direct, recently encountered unforeseen technicalities. The agreement (reached last December) between Canada and the EU effectively removes existing restrictions on flights between the two regions and will eventually permit carriers to operate direct service between communities. Prior to launching their transatlantic advertising campaign last month, GO Travel Direct had been informed by their air carrier partner that all necessary permits were in place. Shortly after release of their exciting news they were instructed to suspend advertising and sales of transatlantic flights aboard Finnair. This unfortunate and unforeseen turn of events has resulted in the postponement of the transatlantic flights from Winnipeg.

The regulatory requirements in question are expected to be satisfied in the near future, and GO Travel Direct fully expects to launch service from Winnipeg, Ottawa, Halifax, St John's and Toronto in 2010. However, for summer 2009, GO Travel Direct will offer service from Montreal using French carrier XL Airways which, flying direct from its country of origin, is not affected by the new agreement in any way.

"It is extremely unfortunate that we will not proceed as planned for this season", said Go Travel Direct Chairman Hugh Boyle. "Our intention was to offer consumers across Canada affordable direct non stop transatlantic flights and we remain optimistic that we will see this opportunity for Winnipeggers come to fruition."

Now in its 9th successful season, GO Travel Direct was the tour operator that introduced the direct-sell vacation concept to Canada. The company continues to offer all-inclusive sun vacations that are among the most competitive in the industry with departures from Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax to Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Florida.
