Golden Living Names James Avery, M.D., Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer

FORT SMITH, AR--(Marketwire - December 17, 2008) - Renowned geriatrics physician-leader and author James Avery, M.D., has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Golden Living. Most recently he was Senior Medical Director, Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care. He will begin his new position on January 26, 2009, and he will be based out of Golden Living's Washington, D.C. office.

As Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Avery will be instrumental in helping Golden Living provide superior quality medical, nursing and therapy services to its patients and residents. He will have clinical responsibility and oversight across all Golden Living businesses -- including Golden LivingCenters, Aegis Therapies and AseraCare Hospice and Home Health. He will be responsible for redefining the role and significantly strengthening the effectiveness of the Medical Directors and attending physicians who work with Golden Living.

Dr. Avery will be charged with identifying opportunities that improve Golden Living's clinical outcomes as well as helping the organization implement quality-of-care improvements. He plans to build upon the company's patient-centric approach to care and disease management throughout the organization. Dr. Avery also will assist in the company's efforts to provide continuity of care from one setting to the next within the Golden Living family of companies.

Dr. Avery is extremely well-qualified to take on this new role. He is a practicing physician who worked for 14 years as an internal medicine and pulmonary specialist in Florida. Dr. Avery is board-certified in Internal and Pulmonary Medicine, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and he is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians.

While working at Visiting Nurse Service of New York Hospice Care, Dr. Avery helped to grow the company into the largest hospice in New York City. Prior to that he was Senior Medical Director of The Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, the largest hospice in the world at that time.

Strongly committed to education and training, Dr. Avery serves as Assistant Clinical Professor in Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the "2007 Lillian Wald Award for Healthcare Leadership in New York City" and the "Roger C. Bone National Leadership Award." He is a frequent author and lecturer on topics including pain and symptom management, palliative medicine and end-of-life care.

Dr. Avery earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received his M.D. Medical Degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa. He served his medical internship and residency at Northwestern University Hospitals in Chicago, and he received fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of South Florida, Tampa.
