Goodwill Helps Visually Impaired Man Land Job and Succeed at New York's Finest

Darryl Humphrey Named Goodwill's 2008 Graduate of the Year

ROCKVILLE, MD--(Marketwire - May 6, 2008) - Darryl Humphrey was unemployed for a year and a half, with no job prospects and no source of income. After working for the same agency for 14 years while his vision slowly deteriorated, Humphrey was let go with no referrals. More than a year later, he had exhausted his savings and applied for public assistance when he learned about Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey's program for people with visual impairments. Humphrey had long dreamed of working for the New York Police Department (NYPD), and Goodwill helped make that dream a reality. Today, he is employed full-time as an administrative aide. Due to his determination and drive, Goodwill is recognizing Darryl Humphrey as Goodwill Industries International's 2008 Graduate of the Year.

Although Humphrey knew his visual impairment would prevent him from becoming a police offer, Goodwill helped him target the right job and gain acceptance into 55-A, a program that excuses people with disabilities from advancement tests if they prove they can do the job with reasonable accommodation. Goodwill registered Humphrey with a temporary placement agency so he could earn a paycheck, all while completing typing tests, academy training and exams, and interviews to join New York's finest.

"Goodwill provides a safety net when it comes to employment," says Humphrey. "All the programs at Goodwill were willing to work together for one person, me, to help find the right job for me and keep me working."

Since December 2006, Humphrey has worked the night shift at the NYPD. He is able to work with the help of the ZoomText screen magnification program.

"Darryl is a man whose resolve is far more powerful than his disability," says Jim Gibbons, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. "Through Goodwill's customized training, he is now poised for long-term employment and promotion."

The Graduate of the Year award honors an outstanding person who has completed a Goodwill Industries career program and is now competitively employed by a non-Goodwill employer in his/her community.
