Gordie Howe C.A.R.E.S. Pro-Am Hockey Tournament Kicks Off in Calgary

Sixth annual tournament raises awareness for Alzheimer's

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - April 13, 2016) - The 2016 Gordie Howe C.A.R.E.S. Pro-Am Hockey Tournament is set to kick-off in Calgary this weekend. The world-class event will take place April 15 to 17 at Winsport Arena and will bring together local amateur hockey players and notable NHL Alumni.

The two-day tournament will see hockey enthusiasts play alongside NHL legends in a fun filled weekend aimed at raising much needed funds and awareness for Alzheimer's and dementia related illnesses.

Since its inception in 2011, the tournament has raised over $6 million for programs, research, education and care for those suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia. Proceeds raised will benefit the Gordie Howe C.A.R.E.S. Center for Alzheimer's Research and Education Society to be located in the brand new Fish Creek Park Manor Village located in SE Calgary, opening in 2018.

"We are honoured to be back in Calgary to host this tournament on behalf of the Howe family," said Allan Klassen, Senior Vice President, Calgary Housing, Brookfield Residential, and Executive Chair of the hockey tournament and chair of the GH CARES Society. "In this tumultuous economy, we continue to be blown away by the community's engagement in the tournament and the support received from participants. Alzheimer's and dementia are becoming increasingly prevalent in our society, impacting over 45,000 Albertans today and a number that will grow to over 100,000 in the next 15 years. We could not be more grateful and proud to contribute to the fight against these debilitating illnesses."

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. on April 16, Calgarians will be invited to watch teams face off at the rink. Returning and new NHL Alumni including Bryan Trottier, Marty McSorley and Mathew Barnaby are just a few of the acclaimed Alumni who will be hitting the ice.

The weekend will commence with a formal luncheon at the Westin Calgary on April 15, celebrating Canadian excellence and featuring members of the 1972 Summit Series, including Paul Henderson, Yvan Cournoyer and Dennis Hull. The luncheon will be followed by an exclusive draft evening where participating teams will have the chance to draft an NHL Alumni to their team.

All Calgarians, young and old are invited to join us on Saturday and Sunday at Winsport and meet some of your hockey hero's from the past as we continue our fight against this
