Government of Canada Announces Appointment of New Chairperson to Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 1, 2010) - The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Minister of Labour, today announced the appointment of Ms. Bayla Kolk as Chairperson of the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, effective immediately.

"Ms. Kolk has a great deal of experience in the field of occupational health and safety," said Minister Raitt. "Her extensive experience and practical knowledge will be an asset to the Centre."

During her career in the federal public service, Ms. Kolk has held senior positions in a number of departments and agencies, including Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), the Privy Council Office, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and Transport Canada.

On May 25, 2009, Ms. Kolk became Assistant Deputy Minister of Compliance, Operations and Program Development, within the Labour Program, at HRSDC. Ms. Kolk supports the Labour Program in ensuring effective program policy development and delivery of services for safe, healthy, cooperative and productive workplaces in Canada.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, located in Hamilton, Ontario, was created in 1978 to promote the fundamental right of Canadians to a healthy and safe working environment. Governed by a tripartite council representing the federal, provincial and territorial governments, employers and workers, the Centre provides Canadians with unbiased and relevant information that supports responsible decision making on health and safety issues in the workplace.
