Government of Canada Announces Funding for Wharf Repairs in Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan

PELICAN NARROWS, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2008) - The Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food and the Canadian Wheat Board, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will provide funding in the amount of $165,000 to repair the timber crib wharf located in Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan.

"These repairs are vital to this community," said Minister Ritz. "Commercial fish harvesters and local residents require a well-maintained and operational harbour in order to safely navigate on Saskatchewan waters."

The deck of this wharf has deteriorated to a condition where it has become a serious safety hazard to users and community residents. The work involves raising the height of the wharf by 0.45 metres to resolve past problems with high water levels, as well as replacing the deck. Improvements will also be made to the access ramp.

Public Works and Government Services Canada has tendered the project and all repairs will be completed prior to the upcoming open water season.

This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the Pelican Narrows Harbour Authority that manages and operates the facility for local users. This close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fish harvesters.
