The Government of Canada Builds on Its Northern Strategy by Investing in Yukon's Tourism Sector

WHITEHORSE, YUKON--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2008) - The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Secretary of State for Small Business and Tourism, on behalf of Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians, today announced funding to help expand a new and exclusive niche in the Yukon's tourism sector.

Great River Journey Incorporated, which operates a river safari on the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City, will receive just over $1 million through Canada's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) initiative.

"Our Government is proud to support this unique tourism venture, which is a one-of-a-kind, eight-day, world-class wilderness river safari on the Yukon River,"said Minister Ablonczy."Our Government has developed a Northern Strategy to help expand job opportunities and sustain long-term economic growth, and projects like this one fit right into the plan."

With the new funding, Great River Journey will expand its employee recruitment and training practices, expand its "geo-tourism" marketing strategy beyond the U.S. into Europe, and complete preparations for the spring.

"Great River Journey welcomes Canada's funding through the Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development initiative," said George Asquith, President of Great River Journey."We look forward to our first commercial season and sharing the Yukon's splendour and cultural richness with visitors from around the world."

It is expected that the Great River Journey will attract new, international markets and provide broad benefits to the Yukon's tourism sector.

The Prime Minister of Canada announced in 2007 that the Government of Canada is developing a northern strategy, which will help the North realize its true potential as a healthy and prosperous region within a strong and sovereign country.
