The Government of Canada Congratulates All Participants in the 36th Canadian Sport Awards

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 24, 2009) - The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), congratulates all of the nominees, finalists, and winners of the 36th Canadian Sport Awards. The annual awards program honours the true champions of sport: athletes, coaches, volunteers, and leaders.

Minister of State Lunn presented the Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards during a special ceremony event at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

"I am honoured to be here with such an outstanding group of world-class athletes, coaches, volunteers, and leaders, who are role models for our Canadian youth," said Minister of State Lunn. "These inspiring Canadians are making a difference in our communities. Their spirit, drive, and commitment to sport are encouraging Canadians to live actively and embrace the power of sport.

"This is a very exciting time for sport; in less than a year, Canada will welcome the world to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and our Canadian athletes will be able to showcase their talent and skill among the best of the best in the world right here at home," said Minister of State Lunn. "On behalf of the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate all of the nominees, finalists, and winners of these Canadian Sport Awards and thank you for the contribution you are all making to sport excellence."

The 36th Canadian Sport Awards were organized by the True Sport Foundation and recognize the leadership and excellence of individuals making a difference in Canadian sport. The True Sport Foundation is working to transform the lives of everyday Canadians and to get Canadians excited about sport and active living.
