Government of Canada Congratulates Athletes at the 2009 Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating Event

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 6, 2009) - The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), today congratulated medal winners and announced a contribution to the 2009 Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating event that was held this weekend in Calgary.

"We are pleased to support the Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating event, and I am thrilled to be here to congratulate the athletes who competed on the weekend," said Minister of State Lunn. "As our athletes prepare to represent Canada at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, events such as this provide them with an opportunity to compete against the best speed skaters in the world. Their performances will give us a taste of the excitement to come."

The 2009 Essent ISU World Cup Speed Skating event was held at the Olympic Oval in Calgary and attracted more than 250 of the world's best long-track speed skaters from over 24 countries.

Speed Skating Canada is the national governing body for speed skating in Canada. The organization oversees the management of speed-skating programming from the entry level to international competition, including Canadian athletes and teams participating in world championships and Olympic Games.

The Government of Canada is providing funding of $161,585 to Speed Skating Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program (http://www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/sc/pgm/hstng-eng.cfm) to help make this event a success.
