The Government of Canada Congratulates Members of Canadian Rowing Team Participating in 2008 Beijing Olympic Summer Games

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 25, 2008) - The Government of Canada celebrated the accomplishments of the Canadian National Rowing team at the Canadian Rowing Foundation's Row Gold Gala 2008 fundraising event.

The Honourable Helena Guergis, Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport), on behalf of the Government of Canada, today wished our national rowing team members the best of success as they prepare to compete against the world's top athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Summer Games in China.

"I am pleased to be here today to congratulate the members of the national rowing team who will be representing Canada in Beijing," said Secretary of State Guergis. "Our country's athletes are an enormous source of pride for all Canadians and are role models for our young people. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish Team Canada Rowing the utmost success in Beijing."

Through the Children's Fitness Tax Credit and support to the renewed ParticipAction program, the Government of Canada is helping motivate all Canadians to develop enthusiasm for sport and physical activity. To help Canadian athletes strive for Gold during the Beijing Games and for many Olympics to come, the Government has committed ongoing funding to the summer-sport Road to Excellence program.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in this country and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. When the commitments in Budget 2008 are fully implemented, the Government of Canada's investment in the Canadian sport system will reach an all-time high of more than $164 million annually.
