Government of Canada: Congratulations on Team Canada's Participation at the Commonwealth Games

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 26, 2006) -

By the Honourable Michael D. Chong

President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister for Sport

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to congratulate the outstanding athletes who represented Canada at the XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia. Canada has a proud history of success at the Games, and the achievements of our athletes in Melbourne exemplify their commitment to excellence and their strong spirit of competition. Canadians across the country are celebrating their success.

The Commonwealth Games are truly unique: they promote fellowship among nations and the important role of sport in healthy living and in social and personal development. They are also the only international multi-sport event that fully integrates athletes with disabilities. Over the past twelve days, our athletes have been proud ambassadors for Canada by embodying the principles of these special Games; they have helped strengthen our country's reputation on the international stage.

As the Commonwealth Games conclude, the Government of Canada continues to work in partnership with the sport community to ensure greater participation and provide opportunities for excellence for all Canadians, including persons with disabilities.

While in Melbourne for the closing ceremonies, I had the opportunity to meet with several of Canada's exceptional athletes and coaches who inspired all of us at home and to thank them for their important contribution to our lives. I was also very happy to reaffirm the Government of Canada's support of Halifax's bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games and to wish the Halifax Bid Society every success in its effort to get the Games to Canada.
