Government of Canada Funds Construction of New War Memorial in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 18, 2011) - Rob Clarke, Member of Parliament for Desnethé—Missinippi—Rivière Churchill, on behalf of the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), announced today up to $675 in federal government support through the Community War Memorial Program for a project in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"With this new program, communities will show they remember by constructing new memorials to honour Canada's truest heroes—our Veterans," said Minister Blackburn. "Commemorating these brave men and women builds on our government's commitment to support Canada's Veterans."

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #165 is receiving $675 to build a new commemorative memorial in front of the Legion building. The project will include the installation of a new bilingual commemorative plaque.

"Local cenotaphs are an important part of community life in cities and towns across Canada," said MP Clarke. "The Government of Canada is working with many cities, towns and volunteer organizations to support new memorials like this one in Loon Lake as a reminder of our country's rich military history."

Veterans Affairs Canada is partnering with communities across Canada to build memorials to commemorate the achievements and sacrifices of those who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace.

Applications to the Community War Memorial Program are accepted throughout the year. Interested non-profit groups and other organizations may be eligible for funding through the Community War Memorial Program to build new memorials or to make major additions to existing ones. The next application deadline is April 28, 2011.
