Government of Canada Grants $72,728 in Funding to Quebec Film and Television Council for Research Project

MONTRÉAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Dec. 21, 2010) - The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of State for Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding of $72,728 in non-repayable funding to the Quebec Film and Television Council (QFTC) through the Business and Regional Growth program for a collaborative research project on digital imaging for the film and television industry.

"This research project will help improve the competitiveness of the digital imaging sector in Greater Montréal while strengthening its position within the increasingly competitive global market," explained Minister of State Lebel.

The aim of the project is to develop new tools and techniques to step up innovation and knowledge-building in the area of chromatic screen shooting incorporating computer-generated images. In so doing, the QFTC hopes to help small and medium-sized enterprises in the film and television digital imaging industry expand their expertise into the use of high-resolution computer-generated imaging technologies.

The Business and Regional Growth program is intended to support enterprises in their efforts to become more innovative in order to maximize their performance and competitive potential.

In recent years, film producers have been increasingly turning to digital imaging as an alternative to traditional live shooting, which has led to sharp growth in the sector as well as the heightened need for Montreal firms in the industry to stay on the cutting edge of technology in order to remain viable and efficient.

The QFTC's mission is to promote Quebec's advantages, particularly on the Los Angeles and New York markets, in an effort to attract international film productions and open up new business opportunities for Quebec enterprises. The Council also provides hospitality services to visiting film productions and support to local productions by assisting in the preparation of bids, facilitating contact with local stakeholders, scouting for locations and overseeing production follow-up. Competition watch, improving the offering and mounting a major digital photo library composed of thousands of shots are also among the many functions performed by the QFTC.
