Government of Canada Helps People with Disabilities Gain Job Skills in the Halifax, Truro and Amherst Areas

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwire - Jan. 30, 2012) - Dr. Kellie Leitch, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, today announced that TEAM Work Cooperative Limited will receive close to $608,000 through the Government's Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities.

"Investments like these are key to our government's top priority of job creation and economic growth. We believe that all Canadians should have the opportunity to obtain the skills and training they need to succeed in today's job market," said Dr. Leitch. "By supporting this project, our government is helping Canadians with disabilities in Nova Scotia-specifically those in the Halifax, Truro and Amherst areas-maximize their potential and independence."

This investment will help 124 people with disabilities gain the skills they need to get jobs in the Halifax, Truro and Amherst areas.

With assistance from the federal Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities, TEAM Work Cooperative Limited's Community Coordinator project will help participants enhance their work skills and increase their participation in their communities and in the labour market.

The Community Coordinator component of the Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities is designed to support projects that help Canadians with disabilities develop a broad range of skills and work experience they need to participate in the job market. It is available to eligible organizations that enter into agreements with eligible participants and employers in support of activities that further Opportunities Fund objectives.

The Opportunities Fund for Persons with Disabilities is part of the Government of Canada's strategy for building the most educated, most competent and most flexible workforce in the world. The Government highlighted its commitment to this strategy in Canada's Economic Action Plan. One of the key elements of the Plan consists of increasing and improving opportunities available to Canadian workers through skills development.
