Government of Canada Makes Donation to the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary in Honour of the Royal Wedding

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - April 28, 2011) - The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary Pacific Region is delighted to announce that the Canadian Government has donated $50,000 to the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary (CCGA) as a wedding gift to Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton who will wed on Friday, April 29th, 2011.

"The Government of Canada will offer this wedding gift on behalf of all Canadians," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement. "The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary was chosen by Prince William and Miss Middleton to be the Canadian beneficiary of a special charitable fund that was set up to celebrate their wedding. The donation of $50,000 by the Government of Canada will allow the organization's volunteers to carry out their mission, which is to offer-day and night-a permanent search and rescue program to meet the needs of Canada's marine services, as well as to prevent injuries or loss of human life at sea."

"We truly appreciate this donation received from the Government and citizens of Canada," says Randy Strandt, President Pacific Region, CCGA. "This funding will certainly help us continue to train our crews, respond to rescue incidents, and promote safety on or near the water in Canada. This announcement carries further benefit in that it recognizes the efforts of the nearly 5,000 Auxiliary volunteers across Canada who put in thousands of hours each year to train and respond to emergencies, assisting complete strangers in the worst of circumstances."

The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, a 100% volunteer organization, is on call 24/7 and operates more than 1500 vessels along the Canadian coastlines. They respond to a quarter of all marine incidents and save over 200 lives every year.
