Government of Canada Moves Forward on Establishing the New Centre of Expertise for Pay Services

MIRAMICHI, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Feb. 14, 2011) - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, announced today that the Government of Canada is launching a Request for Information (RFI) regarding the availability of office space for lease in the City of Miramichi, New Brunswick. The space is required for the establishment of the new Centre of Expertise for pay services announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper in August 2010. This is the first of several phases planned over a number of years and a lease commencement date for the first phase is anticipated for January 1, 2012.

The Centre will create 550 public service jobs in Miramichi, reaching a full staff complement by 2015–16. For the first phase of the project, up to 150 staff will be hired to work in Miramichi. At this time, Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) is seeking information for the possible leasing of office and storage space of up to 3,200 usable square metres in Miramichi to house the first wave of employees.

"On August 19, 2010, the Prime Minister announced that the Government of Canada is modernizing its 40-year-old pay system for public servants and consolidating pay services in a new Centre of Expertise in Miramichi," reiterated Minister Ambrose. "The Request for Information launched today confirms the Government of Canada's commitment to increase the effectiveness of public service operations by saving taxpayers millions of dollars and creating hundreds of jobs in Miramichi."

"This is another step forward to establishing this new Centre of Expertise in Miramichi," said Member of Parliament from Miramichi, Tilly O'Neill Gordon. "This Centre will provide great benefits to the community by creating jobs and stimulating the local economy."

A notice for this RFI has just been posted on the government's electronic tendering service, MERX™. Based on the information received, this may result in PWGSC issuing an invitation to tender for this possible leasing requirement for the first phase of the Centre of Expertise project.

PWGSC is currently defining its implementation plan for the Centre of Expertise, including the requirements for long-term office space, as well as equipment and services such as computers and furniture. The acquisition activities will be completed in different phases over the next five years. Planning is also underway by PWGSC to determine the accommodation solution for the full staff complement.
